The Sustainable Economies Law Center provides direct legal support to individuals and groups who are working to create new solutions for resilient local economies. The Resilient Communities Legal Cafe is usually a first-come first-serve legal advice clinic.
But this Legal Cafe is special.
We're in a unique situation where millions of people got $1,200 that they weren't expecting to receive. In this time of crisis, some may be wondering how they can redirect that check back to the community and those who need it more. So there's a movement to redistribute stimulus checks if you are able. At the same time, a growing number of mutual aid groups are faced with questions about gifts, loans, taxes, and what to do with that $1,200.
So we hosted a Mutual Aid Themed Legal Cafe and Teach-in last month with more than 50 participants! ICYMI: The recording is here. We received so many questions about tax law that we’re planning a “Mutual Aid, Part 2” teach-in to try to answer those questions.
