A community conversation and training on transformative, community-led responses to the housing crisis.
May 15th, 6:00 - 7:30pm at Qilombo Community Center, 2313 San Pablo Ave, Oakland
Legal advice sessions to follow the teach-in - RSVP here for donation-based legal advice!
As government and market forces continue to fail in providing meaningful solutions to the ongoing and widespread housing crisis, what solutions can we look to within our own communities? Are there options beyond the traditional responses of 'affordable housing' and single-family home-ownership?
This teach-in will explore some of the underlying drivers of mass displacement and gentrification, and discuss models for community-controlled permanently affordable housing.
We will share existing models for community-controlled housing, including community land trusts and limited equity housing cooperatives, as well as emerging models of community ownership such as real estate investment cooperatives and the permanent real estate cooperative, a new model being developed by Sustainable Economies Law Center and People of Color Sustainable Housing Network.
Join us if you are interested in learning about transformative and practical ways for community to come together and create our own solutions to the housing crisis!
***We will be providing first-come, first-serve legal advice on issues related to cooperative housing through our Resilient Communities Legal Cafe simultaneously with the teach-in. If you'd like to attend both, you can RSVP for a legal advice session here, and receive individual legal advice after the teach-in has concluded.
