Policy Cafe: How to Draft a Ballot Initiative

Do you have an idea to change your community for the better? Do you want to explore your inner policymaker? Come get answers, ideas, and strategies from our center's staff, experienced attorneys, and policymakers!

At the Law Center, we believe that ANYONE CAN MAKE POLICY! That's why you're all invited to this three-part event (you can come to all or just parts of it!) co-hosted by the Community Democracy Project (CDP)!

Part 1: Nano-Training (How to draft a ballot initiative)
5:30 PM - 5:45 PM
Join our short teach-in on how to draft a ballot initiative. CDP will present on how they worked with lawyers, organizers, and community members to draft a petition for a People's Budget in Oakland. (CDP is an all-volunteer campaign working to turn the power structure right-side up by putting the people of Oakland in charge of the city budget.)

Part 2: Petition-Drafting Workshop (Do you have feedback for CDP?)
5:45 PM - 6:45 PM
CDP is requesting feedback on their petition! Last year, CDP gathered more than 40,000 signatures with the help of a group of volunteers and a new worker-owned signature gathering firm. They were juuuuuust shy of making it on the 2020 ballot! But now they're bigger and stronger and are ramping up for their next signature gathering campaign. But first, they're asking the community for feedback on their initiative. To participate fully in this workshop, please read CDP's current draft here

Part 3: Policy Cafe (What are your policy ideas?)
6:45 PM - 7:30 PM
We'll host a Policy Cafe and offer individualized consultations for folks who want to discuss their specific ideas and get advice on questions such as:

• What are the next steps after I have come up with my policy idea?
• How do I draft a policy proposal?
• How do I approach council members, county supervisors, or other legislators about my idea?
• How do I navigate the legislative process?
• In what ways can my nonprofit participate in policy advocacy?

The Policy Cafe will provide direct support to individuals and groups who are working to create new solutions for resilient local economies through policymaking and is part of our Transformative Policymakers project. It's modeled after our Resilient Communities Legal Cafe, which provides donation-based legal advice for the community.
