Attitudes and approaches to real estate are rapidly shifting. Around the U.S., BIPOC-led and justice-oriented groups are forming everywhere to steward land projects with the vision to permanently nurture culture, livelihood, and community. As a handful of new land projects are taking root in California with the support of Sustainable Economies Law Center, some common patterns, practices, and structures are emerging that can inform projects everywhere.
In this presentation, cartoonist/attorney Janelle Orsi will share what we’ve observed and learned, and offer practical and engaging tools to support radical real estate groups. We’ll help answer questions like: How do we permanently remove land from speculative market and move away from individual ownership models? What entity, title-holding, governance, financial, and tax structures can support this? Many people have heard about community land trusts, permanent real estate cooperatives, limited equity housing cooperatives, and other structures. But what do those mean? How much flexibility do communities have to craft structures to meet their own needs? How can we cut through the legal red tape? And what matters most in these decisions?
