This workshop is about the senior housing crisis that is being felt acutely throughout the Bay Area. The rates of homelessness and widespread housing insecurity among elders are unprecedented and will only continue to grow as the shortage of affordable housing plagues society’s most vulnerable.
While there are no easy solutions, this teach-in will provide updates about new shared housing options and supportive services that might be of assistance in planning for the “third chapter." RSVP BELOW!
We will discuss:
-
Berkeley’s New Laws on Accesory Dwelling Units
-
A potential home share program in Berkeley
-
Creating or finding senior cooperatives and cohousing
-
Student and nonprofit organizations that assist seniors in looking for shared housing, or aging in place
About the Facilitator
Julie Gilgoff is a Borchard Fellow in Law and Aging at the Sustainable Economies Law Center. Her year-long fellowship focuses on collective senior housing options, and permanently affordable housing solutions. As a part of her work, she is collaborating with the Bay Area Community Land Trust to promote a newly forming senior housing cooperative called Hibiscus Commons.
We're excited to be co-sponsoring our event with the East Bay Community Law Center and the Netivot Shalom Committee on Creative Aging: V'Dor LaDor.
