Rhythm and Resistance Party

Tonight at ESM Studios (981 35th St Oakland CA 94608), we’re gathering for a joyful night of dancing, food, and togetherness. We’re cranking up the music, serving up tasty tacos, and raising our glasses to the power of community! Come ready to eat, drink, laugh, and play — and yes, bring the kids! We’ll have crafts and activities for all ages. Whether you're here to move, connect, or just soak in the summer energy — this is a space for all ages, all communities, all hearts. Let’s come together and celebrate resilience, rhythm, and joy. RSVP here!

Worker Coops in Prison Legislation

AB 746 was meant to incentivize the development of worker cooperatives inside of California prisons and establish critical infrastructure to support an ecosystem of cooperatives owned and governed by incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals, as well as crime survivors. Unfortunately, AB 746 was “held” in the Appropriations Committee, effectively killing the bill for this legislative session. The good news is that, Assemblymember Tina McKinnor has committed to reintroducing the bill for the next legislative cycle! To read our full update, please visit our blog post about it here.

Workers Opportunity to Purchase Act

We co-wrote the Workers’ Opportunity to Purchase Act and it was officially introduced by San Francisco District 1 Supervisor Connie Chan — giving workers the first right to buy their workplace when it’s up for sale. This is about community stability, workplace democracy, and generational wealth for workers. Let’s build the future we deserve. Check out some of the highlights from our public comment at the SF Board of Supervisors meeting in this video!

Living in Alignment: Healing through a Worker Self-Directed Nonprofit (and Why Academia and Other Jobs Suck) by Veryl Pow

This is Veryl’s story of gratitude towards Sustainable Economies Law Center (SELC) for catalyzing a healing journey reintegrating him into a larger web of life. He writes about restoring his humanity through worker self-direction, his journey to reconnect with spirit, and practicing alignment in situations where he tends to practice avoidance.

Community Over Chaos Calendar

As part of our grassroots fundraising campaign, we organized a month of events for movement lawyers and activists who are interested in learning about ways we can resist the current chaos and build strong, self-governing communities that protect and support themselves and each other.

If you missed Worker Self Direction and the Law, Are We a Church?, Worker Focused Worker Cooperative Conversions, and/or the Legal History of Whiteness, it’s ok! We’ll publish the recordings soon.

It’s not too late to RSVP to Ending Zoning’s Focus on the Family (MCLE) | Aug 27 @ 1pm PT | Consider zoning law’s exclusion of non-family groups, proposing policy changes to support inclusion of non-family groups, and showing how this policy change can support California’s housing production goals.
