Collective Courage Book Club 2022

REPAIRED NATIONS’ Collective Courage Book Club walks participants through the pivot book by Jessica Gordon Nembhard, chapter by chapter every week. We focus on how different organizations and leaders have failed and succeeded, mining the past for knowledge on how to best shape our future. REPAIRED NATIONS’ staff & fellow cooperators co-host the book club Monday - Thursday @ 12:30 - 1:00 pm PST. For the first time this year, Work Based Learning Participants will start in our virtual booking, helping them understand how to avoid pitfalls of the past, stand on the shoulders of our ancestors, and find best practices. REPAIRED NATIONS’ Youtube & Instagram, are the archives for this project and is where the public can find recaps.

We honor the cultures whose ancestors relied on oral histories and education; comprehension and intelligence go deeper than Eurocentric Training. We tap into the organic intellectual streak present in communities often not included in Eurocentric, institutional learning environments. We bridge two spaces: (1) the natural learned expertise and expertise of underrepresented communities and (2) the bodies of literature they may otherwise not engage as sources of information. We cross the divide between education and soul activation. We translate solutions into a medium that is expertise, but is often overlooked because of value propositions. We gather to show people the power inherent in themselves, and facilitate community reflections that evidences greatness and deep knowledge.

We take away all borders to participation and use non judgmental,  non-violent, constant communication. We uplift those who were shamed and disconnected from their opportunity to learn.  Everyone is always right for participating. We create psychological safety in our group settings through very intentional facilitated discussions.

We make information more accessible by distilling large bodies of text into micro-modular segments. We confirm the natural intuition of Black Communities through our micro-modular summaries and facilitate conversation to elicit learning rather than rote instruction. We facilitate the discovery of culturally relevant conclusions, solutions, and pathways to meaningful, structural change.

TIME - Mondays - Thursday from 12:30 - 1:00pm PST on Zoom

REPAIRED NATIONS’ S.K. Work Based Learning will be navigating up to 12 Youth & Young Adults as a cohort through three consecutive 3 month programs: starting with hands-on cooperative or legacy development for attendees of the Collective Courage Book Club; followed by a 3 month apprenticeship at a cooperative or collective; ending with an internship at REPAIRED NATIONS. The program will be centered around goal implementation, growing hard & soft work skills, collective governance, interpersonal development & gaining cooperative business acumen. The first phase of the program requires the cooperative development cohort to devote 10 hours a week, including 2 weekly meetings and a bi-monthly cohort gathering. The legacy development cohort will meet during the evenings approximately 3 times a week, in addition to the bi-monthly gathering.

REPAIRED NATIONS’ 4th Annual Cooperatives Conference & Lets Build Sessions are an introduction to the core tenets of what REPAIRED NATIONS does: education, pan african connections, & building cooperatives. The conference is a hands-on cooperative experience planned for October/November, where we highlight the actions of cooperatives across the Diaspora, share lessons from our cooperative network, and forefront the importance of art, music, and culture in Black cooperative history. The conference is organized and run cooperatively, creating a space for people relatively new to cooperatives to learn cooperative principles in action.

REPAIRED NATIONS’ Seed Commons Technical Assistance & Loan Fund is the non-extractive funding pathway that the organization cultivates as part of a national network comprised of more than 25 organizations.  We take people from beginning level education into increasingly technical information, supporting new & existing cooperatives to learn the skills necessary and practices for sustainable businesses that create generational wealth. Our first loan will be processed this year, with many more shortly following.
