A message from our Executive Director, Janelle Orsi:
Lately, this big word has been stuck in my head:
Three things are happening right NOW that are creating a sense of urgency at the Sustainable Economies Law Center. Sometimes, it's hard to see that they are happening, so we thought some visuals might help...
First, about one-sixth of all land in the U.S. might be bought up by big companies in the next 15 to 20 years, as aging farmland owners retire. What will happen to small farms? What will happen to our food system?
Second, up to 3/4 of small companies (10 million of them) will likely put up for-sale signs in the next 10 years, as owners retire. What will happen to jobs? What will happen to local production?
Third, we need to transition to renewable energy ASAP. As we transition, there is substantial risk that we will become forever reliant on big energy companies to supply that energy.
This is a question that SELC does not take lightly:
Will they be sold...
Or will you join SELC in building a
That's right! Together, we will steward farmland to create equitable access for present and future generations...
And we'll convert millions of businesses to worker-owned cooperatives so that jobs and production stay local...
And we'll help every community become energy-independent by growing renewable energy cooperatives everywhere!
Together, we will think about the future and say:
Though we know you must also be thinking...
That's why every community needs a law center where you can get support to build people powered economies!
That's what SELC is doing NOW!
We're going BIG and supporting the spread of our work across the U.S. and beyond! But only a people-powered organization can build a people-powered economy...
Will you join us NOW so we can grow the movement together?
And please share this with everyone you know!
May is our Community Membership Month, so we are having a membership drive to sustain and grow our work, hosting events to engage with our supporters, and throwing a party to recognize, thank, and celebrate with our members and sustainers. I hope you will join us.
