Jason Tompkins

Jason is excited to steward the Law Center’s contribution to nonprofit financial commons in the newly formed Financial Craftsperson and Bookkeeper role! He brings 7 years of experience in understanding the frameworks, functions, and patterns of bookkeeping, financial data wrangling and administration in nonprofit and housing cooperative settings.

Jason was born and raised in Jennings and Florissant - two northern working class suburbs of St. Louis, adjacent to Ferguson, MO. He studied AfroFuturism, Cinema and African American Theater at Oberlin College and later, Webster University. Jason has called Chicago home for the past 13 years, and has participated in various grassroots organizing efforts, specifically regarding Queer and Trans youth development, Police Accountability and Climate Justice. He’s a co-founder of #TheBluestLie Collaborative - a coalitional effort and awareness campaign that blocked Chicago City Ordinance 2016-4878, as well as two similar IL state house bills. Prior to joining the Law Center, Jason served as the Finance and Operations Manager for City Bureau, a local news lab building capacity for robust information systems across Chicago’s South and West side communities and beyond.

He is also a tenant-member of Qumbya Housing Cooperative, and served on the Board of Directors for 2 ½ years. As Qumbya’s inaugural Conflict Support Coordinator, he’s worked on conflict de-escalation policies, toolkits and info sessions - rooted in Transformative Justice practices - and led a Community Accountability team across the membership of 65 diverse tenants.

Jason enjoys a good suspense-thriller, smoky cuisine, and anything with turmeric in it ;-)
