Advocacy 101 for Nonprofits (Webinar)

Turning Nonprofit Advocates into Transformative Policymakers

Did you know that federal law allows 501(c)(3) public charities (including houses of worship and public foundations) to do generous amounts of lobbying? In fact, lobbying is not only legal – it’s one of the most effective means for nonprofits to advance their missions! Whether it's legalizing urban farming, establishing a public bank, or creating incentives for worker cooperatives, there are many reasons why 501(c)(3) public charities choose to lobby to achieve their policy goals. Join this webinar to learn what lobbying is and why it is so important.

This training will address:

  • How tax law permits lobbying for nonprofits
  • Yearly lobbying limits for charities
  • One easy step most charities can take to maximize the amount they’re allowed to spend on lobbying
  • Tips for taking advantage of the narrow definitions of lobbying and making the most of your lobbying limit
  • The application of these rules to ballot measure activities
  • A brief overview of the rules for unions, professional associations (like the Chamber of Commerce), and political organizations.
