Have you ever wondered how a seed forms?  Did you realize that that little grain breathes?  Do you want to know more about the connection between insects, flowers, fruit and seed?  Then come and take part in this fascinating and engaging teach-in hosted at SELC’s Resilient Communities Legal Cafe on September 3^rd from 6 to 7:30 pm. Members of City Slicker Farms, Sarah Karlson and Joseph, will explain and demonstrate the “magic” of pollination and seed saving.

We will visit the urban garden at Sustaining Ourselves Locally where you will see flower parts, learn the processes of fertilization, and gain a deeper understanding of how and why to save seeds.  Bring your questions and share your experiences.  You will leave with strategies to select and collect seeds as well as ideas on how pollination works.

About the Facilitators!

Joseph grew up in Oakland and spent twenty years as an educator in both public and private middle and High schools.  He traded in his chalk and white board markers for shovel and digging fork to help grow food for the people of West Oakland. He now mentors several families and a few senior centers as well as manages three of CSF’s market farms.  A father of three adult children, he loves to share his knowledge and always wants to learn more. 

Sarah is the Childcare Garden Coordinator at City Slicker Farms where she empowers childcare facilities to build and maintain gardens for food and education, and provides garden training and curriculum ideas for staff.  Sarah has a bachelor's degree in Biology and Environmental Studies, and a master's degree in Culture, Ecology, and Sustainable Community with a concentration in Ecological Agriculture.
